Get under the skin of Bodmin Jail with an in-depth personal guided tour through the history of the most haunted places in Cornwall.
Bodmin Jail and the guided heritage tour is one of the most popular events in Cornwall, steeped in history and with something for everyone, it’s the perfect family day out in Cornwall.
It is an excellent example of the ingenuity and engineering prowess of Victorian architects. Designed by Sir John Call and built in 1779, the Bodmin Jail was originally built for King George III and features incredible vaulted ceilings and striking carved wood panelling, complete with a heating and cooling system that was unprecedented for its time.
Our guided prison tour gives you a deeper insight into what life was like behind bars in the 18th century, and how the prison came to be. Visit the infamous Execution Pit, restored to full working condition and the only working execution pit in the UK.
Learn about the various criminals who were hanged from its gallows, including Selina Wadge, one of only four women to be hanged in the jail, and William Hampton, who was the last person to be executed by hanging in Cornwall.
