Bodmin Jail is committed to providing equality of service, access and facilities for all, for both our visitors and our staff
Where necessary and reasonable in line with the requirements of the Equality Act and within the constraints of the listed building.
We advise that visitors can be dropped at the front gate of the attraction before parking if there are mobility issues. Our team is happy to assist.
Please note that there is a 7 meter incline on the last section of the walk up to the Jail entrance.
The main entrance courtyard is gravelled with solid, even surfaces laid across the main routes in and out to enable easy movement.
Visitors first enter the new building, where they are guided down a staircase to the lowest level of the attraction. A platform lift provides alternative access.
The route through the new ‘Dark Walk’ attraction is level. When visitors reach the original jail building, they are taken up a level, accessed by stairs or a platform lift.
On the other side of the original jail wing, visitors move outside across a ramp, sheltered by a glazed canopy before entering another building.
The next part of the attraction carries on up slopes through the building and out onto a resin-bound gravel ramp. There are zig-zag bends leading up the slope to the former stables area. This area has large stone slabs, but is otherwise level.
The new Gift Shop has level access or ramps.
Please note: the existing building has some narrow, original doorways that are 75cm wide. This should accommodate standard size wheelchairs or prams and conforms to building regulations for existing buildings. However, visitors with wide wheelchairs or prams should contact the attraction before visiting to discuss individual needs.

One accessible WC is available in the Naval Wing level after the main AV area.

Carers will enter the attraction for free when assisting a disabled visitor.
Guests able to provide evidence of their disability will be entitled to bring a carer free of charge.
For proof of disability please bring ONE of the following forms of documentation:
- Entitlement to Disability Living Allowance for children under 16 or DLA/Personal Independent Payments (PIP) for those aged 16-64, either in the form of a letter stating that the benefit has been awarded, or the actual Allowance book.
- Attendance Allowance or Carer's Allowance letter of award.
- Incapacity Benefit books, or a letter notifying the recipient that the benefit has been awarded Incapacity Benefit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
- A valid Blue Badge.
- In the case of visual impairment, a registration card known as the BD8 or a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI).
- A local authority registration document which is local to the attraction where it is being submitted.
- A recognised Assistance Dog ID Card.
- Credibility’s Access Card.

A Note for Our Dog-Loving Visitors
At Bodmin Jail, we absolutely love welcoming four-legged guests, but due to the immersive nature of the museum experience, we kindly ask that dogs are not brought into the main attraction. With sudden sounds, atmospheric lighting, and unexpected movements, it can be a little overwhelming for even the bravest of pups. (Assistance dogs are, of course, welcome throughout the entire site.)

To say thank you for being such responsible dog parents, we’ll treat you to a complimentary drinks token for The Moors Café - because you (and your pooch) deserve a reward after a day well spent!
But don’t worry - your furry friend doesn’t have to miss out entirely! Dogs are more than welcome in the courtyard, The Moors Café, our gift shop, and even the Bodmin Jail Hotel. We believe dogs are part of the family, and we wouldn’t dream of leaving them behind.
If you're out enjoying a walk nearby, The Moors Café also makes the perfect dog-friendly coffee stop - whether you’re strolling through town or exploring Bodmin Moor.
To help everyone enjoy their visit, we simply ask that one member of your group volunteers to be your designated dog-sitter while the others explore the museum. That way, your pup can kick back, relax, and enjoy some downtime.
