Visitor Information

Bodmin Jail remains open to the public as one of Cornwall’s favourite historic attractions until 4th November 2019, allowing visitors a chance to visit 7 days a week, come rain or shine. Our knowledgeable Jail Guides will continue to patrol the exhibits, bringing to life stories of previous residents and the history of the jail.

Some exhibits may be of a sensitive nature for the younger generation and we advise parental guidance.

Please note that Bodmin Jail will close its doors for a 6-month period from 4th November 2019 to allow for construction to finish on the on-going £40 million re-development and preservation project that is set to restore this important heritage asset to its former glory.

The restaurant and gift shop will remain open for diners and pre-booked events only until 1st December 2019. During the closure, all special events, including all After Dark Paranormal Events, will be suspended, returning with a new lease of life in May 2020.

NEW FOR 2020!

On the 1st May 2020, the brand new and exciting £8.5million immersive Bodmin Jail visitor experience will re-open with the introduction of a new ‘Dark Walk’ and a complete rehaul of the existing attraction.

Four linked experiences will take visitors on a route through an interactive, educational, fun and punishing depiction of life in the 18th and 19th century and provide them with entertaining and informative history of the region, the jail and its former inmates. Ghostly voices from Cornwall’s murky past will appear alongside highway robbers, smugglers, miners and tales of the Bodmin Beast, using the latest technology and theatrical effects to allow visitors to experience the life and death within the prison walls and Cornwall as a whole.

Opening times

Our Jail Exhibition, Tearoom, and Gift Shop are open 7 days a week from 9:30am until 6pm (until 4th November 2019)
Our fully licensed Governors Hall Restaurant serves food from noon until 9pm (until 1st December 2019)

PLEASE NOTE:
The Jail will also be closed to the public on Thursday 31st October 2019 for a Private Function. All other ticketed events & bookings will go ahead as scheduled.

Dogs

The Jail is a ‘Dog Friendly’ attraction; well behaved dogs are allowed throughout the Exhibition, Gift Shop, and Tea Room, but not in our Governors Hall Restaurant. We find 11.30am – 3pm is our busiest time during July & August, so you may want to consider this when planning your day out with your four-legged friend.

Accessibility

Regrettably, due to the constraints of the building, we are not a wheelchair or pushchair friendly venue, and those with impaired mobility may also find access to some areas difficult. There are chairs situated on each floor for you to sit down and rest, and customers are welcome to come and have a break in the Tearoom throughout their visit: our Jail Team are on-hand to assist should you need help. We would recommend calling us in advance to discuss your requirements, and please read our   Access Within Bodmin Jail  , which may help you to plan your day.
