Bodmin Jail © 2011 - Designed and Managed by Lilliput
Very eerie, I had feelings of intense claustrophobia and shortness of breath. Very strange.
My husband and I visited the Jail last Friday morning. I didn’t find it that spooky, although I didn’t like the feelings I got as I entered the cells, very small and claustrophobic.
My partner and I visited the Jail on Wednesday and again on Thursday, last week.
I myself am quite sceptical regarding anything paranormal, but my experience of the visit has posed quite a few questions about my own beliefs.
Both my partner and I experienced a terrible headache and an overwhelming feeling of being looked at, especially in the old Naval sector of the prison.
The Thursday seemed to feel better although we were the only visitors at the time! The atmosphere still felt quite peculiar.
We took a number of digital photos in the naval sector and throughout the interior of the prison and these photos do appear to have some interesting anomalies.
We look forward to booking for the overnight with Mark Rabin!
Dispite feeling a little strange while walking through the jail my partner and I were still not convinced it had lived up to it’s haunted reputation. It wasn’t until we got home and plugged in the camera and saw multiple orbs and faces that were not there when we took the pictures. Now we believe there is more to the jail than first meets the eye. We hope to return soon for a spooky night time tour!
I have been to the jail twice now, once when I was about 10 and then again this year . When I revisited I felt so uncomfortable especially on entering the cells. There were many times were I entered a cell and had to leave immediately. I believe there is something deeply disturbing about the place but I would not have the guts to go at night!
I visited Bodmin Jail and found it very spooky, watching the second Most Haunted video just now I had the sudden feeling of shortness of breath – very starnge! I would love to take a night tour!
I came to Bodmin Jail a few years ago now and I could sense spirits indifferent areas, some places were hot and cold, some places I felt safe other places I didn’t. I also had a picture taken in one of the cells which where I knew that there was a spirit present and then when we got home to look at the picture there was a white misty figure in the corner of the cell which was just behind me in the picture.
We came down to the jail from Plymouth in 2007 and caught what we think is the ghost of a preist on film. Upon entering the building I said “preist” and had no idea why I felt there was a religious presence. You can have a look for yourselves. There were three of us and nobody was in the cell and there were no windows to cause reflection. When watching the video we saw what looked like a preist holding in the cell window. We only found it when we got home that evening.I later heard that the spirit of a murdered preist apparently haunts the gaol. If you fancy having a look and giving us your opinion here is the video.
Thanks,
Hannah
I visited Bodmin Jail about a year ago with 2 friends. We did a night tour and could hear tapping in various places around the cells (we were the only people at the time in the tour areas). Although we were scared, it was nothing compared to looking at the photos when we got home. There were orbs surrounding one of my friends on all of the photos of him from different areas of the jail, and were also photos of smokey figures of which we couldn’t see beforehand inside the jail. We recorded a video when walking around the outside cells trying to be as silent as possible, when we listened to it back at the very end of the film you can hear “slash slash slash”, we were all together at the time so know it wasn’t us. It could have been a draft but who knows!? Very freaky! Definately want to go again.
Myself and a couple of my school mates, back in the late 80′s early 90′s spent the night at Bodmin Gaol as part of a ‘sponsored spook’ event. I’m not sure if this took place on Halloween or not, can’t really remember.
We spent the whole night in complete darkness in the main block amongst the original cells and the ‘display’ cells which you can see clearly on this MH footage on this page.
All we had was a small ration of food and drink (non-alcoholic) and some candles, my memory tells me that we didn’t take any torches etc…
It was the most spookiest experience of my life, one which, given the choice, i would probably do again, although the thought of it still fills me with fear.
We were all huddled together in the main hall (between all the cell doors) in sleeping bags and were teasing each other about noises and sounds which could be heard. Alot of it was a ‘wind up’ situation until we heard a repeating knocking coming from the floor above. Myself and a couple of my friends went up to investigate and found the fire exit door (the type with the push-bar on it) It was banging back and forth, despite that it was a clear, good night and no apparent wind.
We did approach the doors whilst cleaning the poop off the floor which was trailing behind us (
) we pulled the door and slammed it shut and made our way back to the main block building again.
When we got back we explained what the noise was and continued to sit it out.
No suprises what happened next…..the banging started again……read the above two paragraphs again and I SWEAR this was true, it was open again. It took one hell of a slam to shut it., the sound reverberated around the whole building when we slammed it shut.
Now read the last 3 paragraphs again, NO KIDDING….this happened about 3 or 4 times until, at about 4am, we bottled it and left the Gaol all holding hands and pooping ourselves.
Now I am the most sceptical (sp?) about this paranormal/haunted activity, I want to believe it happens but have never really experienced any direct activity myself. This was certainly a life changing experience, although as time moves on, i am now not sure whether it could have been someone from the Gaol playing tricks with us. BUT, if you can’t get this out of your head then you’ll never believe….
I had the weirdest time ever at the jail!
We were walking around and my friend started to feel really faint, so we went outside to get some fresh air. As we left, we heard my name being shouted, so we turned around to see who called me, but no one was there. 10 mins later we went back in to find no one else was in there which was very eery. We carried on looking round until something hit me in the back, causing me to scream in pain. I never did find out what it was.
I visited Bodmin Gaol today on the way home from our family holiday… when we were in the main hall i was fine… but then we went down a floor into the darkened cells and the temperatre dropped suddenly and i got a splitting headache as soon as i stepped of the steps… i was the only one in my family to get these symptoms when we went even lower i couldnt breath very well and my headache got worse.. i went into a cell with my mum and had to get out immediatly cause i felt like i was about to faint… when we got into the light and up to the tower i felt fine…when we left the gaol completely my headache went straight away… it was the mst spookiest place ive been in my life and it felt so eery even in broad daylight…i hope to return some day when im older and do the paranormal evening.

I visited the Jail 3 close friends last year in November on a ghost night walk, thank god for Mark Rablin who was our guide at the time.
Pretty much from the start, I felt really nauses and had a banging headache through most of the walk.
I’m open minded when it comes to the paranormal activity, howeve I never could imagine the actual effect it would have on me personally.
When Mark took us into what could have been the navy barricks, not too sure, I had to paranormal experiences, both at seperate times of spirits entering me, I felt there over whelming presence and both were totally different but relative to the jail.
Mark had to warn off one of the spirits as she was hesitant to leave me and wanted me to feel her pain and emotion, after these too events happened I was just totally drained and mentally exhausted.
To be honest now after quite a while after the visit, I would like to go back and do this agai, I felt honoured in some way that a couple of the spirits wanted me to share there experience and emotions.
I’m going back with these friends again and I did feel bad as at the time, I think I freeked them out quite a bit as well as myself.
This time we are going back in november but will be in the day, so who knows.!!!!!!!!
Thanks To Mark if he reads this as I never really got to thank him, not sure if he remembers me, he did have to drag me up the spiral staircases twice so I’m hoping he may.
Zach and I went to Bodmin Jail back in 2008. Knowing nothing of its history we enterd the jail via the back just behind the main entrance building. As we entered we felt a strange feeling of calmness, still and very quiet, a strange sense both of us felt almost awash with inner fear. Now we know some of its history we will definitely go back and make sure we take a camara. A great place to go, we only stumbled across the jail to get out of the rain, while we were visiting family in Bodmin. We will stay longer next time.
I went to the jail on Halloween last year. I was walking around the jail and went into the Naval part of the prison at the bottom car park. I was told there is a spirit of a Naval Officer who was gay and used to abuse the inmates but no one would believe their word over his. In one cell I was told to stand in the door threshold and see what I felt, after a few minutes I began to feel like I was being pushed and my friend could see me physically swaying forward. He then stood in the door way and couldn’t feel anything, then started to feel a warmth on his lower back. It is said the angry spirit will push girls away and try and drag boys back in to the cell with him. Very creepy stuff! I am usually quite skeptical about things like this, but I felt it. There was definately something very angry in that cell. Will be going back to the jail at some point, would love to the do the overnight stay! =)
I went to bodmin jail last June and took lots of pictures. i was looking through them the other day and noticed what looks like a ghost in the background. I was quite shocked tbf
My partner and I visited the jail in October 2009 at 6.30pm. We were the only people in the jail, we did not have any paranormal experiences. However, there were some cells that I could not enter as was getting an overwhelming feeling of dread.
Paranormal or not, the jail is well worth a visit full of history and the ajoining restaurant is wonderful.
me and my family had visited when we went camping at bude, as soon as we got down to the cells you instantly felt freezing cold, my dad took a few pictures of my friends and one had his head and hands in one of those things and their was millions of orbs around him, but we left him there for a bit just to be funny, we laso locked him in a cell, and he says he felt something touch his shoulder as he stood in the far right cornor of this small cell, we also took many family pics and in the distance there was a black shadow in the middle of us, as we looked at them we realised there was ghosts around us, i would never go back there again, not a very nice scene,
occe sage, ilfracombe, north devon,
I visited the jail a couple of years ago on the way home from a family holiday with my family and the dog. The dog came in wi us with them being allowed in the jail and the main hall as fine but going down into the darkened cells the dog refused to go towards them, she ground her feet to the floor and wouldn’t budge she was shaking and her fur was on edge, ended up having to go and put her in the car to explore more (fortunately it was October so it wasn’t to hot in the car) we continued to explore where we left off and my sister who was pregnant at the time came over all emotional and couldn’t stop crying she still can’t explain it as she hadn’t read a disturbing tale or anything, very interesting place, going back there this June!
Visited the jail with my wife in may 2011, gotta say there were some very uncomfortable moments, more so when looking back at the pictures i took and seeing “something” in one of the abandoned cells that was definitely empty when i took the shot….. still spooks me out!
We’ve just returned from a visit and although nothing strange happened to us the photos we took there are dozens of orbs On them . Could it be brick dust I don’t know ? The camera takes clear pictures otherwise
My wife and i were at bodmin goal in august and we enjoyed it very much but thought maybe have people doing guided tours around the place.
but on the up side i got plenty of pics of orbs on my camera and my wife didnt get many and we more or less took the same pics but at different angles how is this possible
All in all i would love to come back and do the overnight tour to see if i get anything
My husband and i visited the gaol last week (20/9/11) while on holiday in Cornwall, while in one of the cells i started to feel incredibly upset and wanted to cry, not just a few tears but great big heaving sobs! Not sure whether this feeling was caused by something paranormal or just from the whole history of the place but it was very unpleasant and passed as soon as i left that particular cell!
